Chiropractic Care to Address Musculoskeletal Injuries Like Muscle Strains

Many people associate chiropractic care with spine-related injuries. However, this form of medical care also relieves pain in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments. Our Fort Myers practitioners know how to determine the necessary techniques to address your pain and other symptoms after a traumatic or overuse injury.

For example, if you suffered a muscle strain in your lower back, we may use a side posture chiropractic adjustment technique to alleviate pain in that area and other parts of your spine.

We prescribe an individualized plan for every patient who visits our Fort Myers chiropractic office with muscle strain symptoms. This could include chiropractic techniques such as:

Diversified

This is a standard technique for spinal manipulation. It addresses joint cavitation, which occurs when the synovial fluid inside your joints releases gas, usually after being thrust out of alignment in your spine.

Seated Diversified

This altered form of the diversified technique allows patients to sit upright in a chair. This generally addresses injuries in the neck and shoulders, but it can also help patients who suffer from lower back pain.

Side Posture

The side posture technique adjusts patients while lying on their side with one knee bent forward. This technique alleviates pain in the lower back or pelvic area.

Thompson Drop-Table Technique

Dr. J. Clay Thompson developed this technique which involves performing chiropractic adjustments on a specially designed drop table.

Knee-Chest

If you suffered a muscle strain in your neck or head, we may use the knee-chest technique to address these injuries. Patients lie their chests on the adjustment table for this technique.

Manual Extremities

Extremity manipulation involves performing adjustments on parts of the skeletal system located outside of the spine, which includes the hips, shoulders, elbows, knees, hands, and feet.

These areas often experience muscle strains during sports and work activities, so we may use this treatment to address your pain if you report a pulled muscle or other symptoms in other areas of your body besides your neck or back.

Toggle Recoil

For patients sensitive to chiropractic adjustments, we can use the toggle recoil technique, which is a gentler approach. This technique can be good if your injuries are relatively minor and do not need extensive manipulation for treatment.

Our facility can explain these techniques in more detail before our physicians perform them on you. We believe in keeping our patients comfortable, so if you ever have questions about your treatment plan, our Fort Myers team is more than happy to answer them.

Physiotherapy Helps Rebuild Damaged Tissue After a Fort Myers Muscle Strain

Physiotherapy, also called physical therapy, is a crucial part of our prescribed treatment for Fort Myers muscle strains. Physical therapy is one of the best ways to safely repair, rebuild, and rehabilitate muscle tissue. With the right physiotherapy exercises, patients often regain mobility in the affected area, build strength and flexibility, and eventually return to regular activities, like work or exercise routines.

Our practitioners serving Fort Myers often utilize these physiotherapy techniques to treat muscle strain injuries:

Massage Therapy

Our physicians prescribe massage therapy to encourage blood circulation, muscle elasticity, and tissue regrowth. Massage therapy may also alleviate some of the mental health effects of an injury that keep you away from work or activities you enjoy.

Stretching and Strengthening Exercises

As your tendons and muscles heal, you will need to implement safe exercises to strengthen these parts so that you can return to previous activities. These exercises, performed in our Fort Myers office and at home, are key to returning to your previous strength and activities.

Our Fort Myers facility has a state-of-the-art Rehab Room where patients learn to perform exercises without causing further harm to their bodies. We also use this space to evaluate their progress and adjust their program as necessary.

Ultrasound Therapy

Ultrasound therapy involves targeting the injured area with sound waves. These soundwaves encourage tissue regrowth through stimulation and can help relax muscles.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (E-STIM) Therapy

E-STIM therapy functions similarly to ultrasound therapy but uses electric pulses instead. These pulses are light and target damaged tissue directly to accelerate the healing process. We often use E-STIM to address nerve pain related to these injuries.

Is Physiotherapy Effective?

Yes, physical therapy is often effective for muscle strains. The Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics published a report showing patients with lower back or neck muscle strains who participated in physiotherapy greatly reduced their pain. This treatment addressed both acute and chronic pain.

Results also found that patients with mechanical neck pain experienced fewer headaches and reduced pain-related disability following physiotherapy for their muscle strains.
